Skitters appear to be a spherical creature about 1 inch in diameter, covered with 1 inch spiky hair. This "hair" is actually tentacles that both allow it move by rolling and squeezing through smaller openings, and to feed. They come in a variety of colors: rust reds, browns, and grays.

Skitters live on bacteria, carrion, mold, decayed plants, and animal waste. They are a food source for many creatures when their preferred food is unavailable. Skitters avoid {{srd5lc|Bright Light}} when possible, as it makes them easier prey.

Fortunately, skitters reproduce at a substantial rate. When a skitter has consumed enough food, it will burst producing 2-5 smaller skitters.

Skitters are generally harmless and solitary, but if their numbers are not controlled, overpopulation will cause a change in skitters. At this time they will form a dangerous {{5ed|Skitter Swarm}}.
