Psycada Overview
Psycadas adults are thick-bodied, winged insects about an inch long (wings are about twice the length of the body). They emerge en masse after a period of years in hibernation. They mate and lay eggs in the roots of trees. The young emberge from the ground and climb the tree. It then molts, producing an adult.
As part of the prelude to mating, the males will produce a loud chirping sound, made by vibrating membrains. This noise can be so loud as to cause actual damage to nearby creatures. If the swarm sense a creature nearby, the swarm will produce a psychic din to augment their chirping in order to drive away preditors.
