Unofficial Description: Devourers were created by Orcus to roam the planes, devouring souls and creating undead. They appear as desiccated giants with clawed hand and feet, and an exposed rib-cage (which sometimes contains an entrapped humanoid.

There is a dispute as to the exact nature of devourers. Volo indicates that they are fiends [1], while Mordenkainen describes them as undead [2].
