Hit Points and Hit Dice

Use the rules in the SRD5 (summarized here)

Hit points (hp) represent, as a value, how much damage your character can sustain. Not that this is not always actual damage, but also represents fatigue and other factors.

Hit dice (hd) represent the number of dice your character can roll after a rest to recover hit points (see Rest) and are used to calculate your character’s hit points.

At 1st level, your character has 1 Hit Die (the type of die depends on the size of your character, usually a d8). Your starting hit points equals the highest number on the die plus your Constitution modifier (see Ability Scores). This is your hit point maximum.

Hit dice, hit points, and hit point maximum increase as your character gains levels (See Level and Experience Points).

Character Size

Also see: SRD5:Size

A character’s hit dice provide the hit point maximum that a character has as well as a limit to the healing a character can perform during a short rest (see Resting in the SRD). Hit points are an abstraction of a character’s ability to absorb damage and will to continue (see Combat, below and in the SRD).

If you have chosen a Stabilized Species, your size should conform to the species you have chosen.

Medium. Most characters are of medium size and have hit dice of d8 and occupy a 5x5 foot space. These creatures range from 4-10 feet tall or long (nose to tail).

Small. Some characters are small, having d6 for hit dice. They also occupy a 5x5 foot space and 4 foot or less tall. Small characters can sometimes fit into areas that larger creatures cannot (or at best can squeeze into).

Large. Some characters are large, having d10 for hit dice. They take up a 10x10 foot space. Large creatures often have to squeeze into spaces that medium creatures fit into comfortably.

Other. At the discretion of the GM, characters may be Huge, Gargantuan, or Tiny. Each of these will likely have severe penalties when trying to manipulate controls and objects made for humanoids.

Building Kalor

Sue has decided that Kalor is a Quim. Quim are [[# Medium|

Medium]] sized humanoids. As such Kalor will have d8s for its hit dice.

Creature Size

All creatures (including characters) fit into one of the following size classifications:

Creature Size
Size Space Hit Die Average HP per Die Max Str and Con
Tiny 2½ by 2½ ft. d4 14
Small 5 by 5 ft. d6 18
Medium 5 by 5 ft. d8 20
Large 10 by 10 ft. d10 22
Huge 15 by 15 ft. d12 25
Gargantuan 20 by 20 ft. or larger d20 10½ 30

Building Kalor
Sue confers with her GM and they decide that Kalor is medium size, so will start with a d8 for her hit dice and will have 8 hit points (plus any Constitution bonus).

Rules Dependency
The Phoenix Ash rules are dependant on the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition System Reference Document (SRD-OGL v5.1), or SRD5. The following rules will parallel these rules and note differences between them.
