Spider Overview

Spiders (order Icon External Link.svg Araneae) are air-breathing arthropod Icon External Link.svgs that have eight legs and chelicerae Icon External Link.svg with fangs able to inject venom Icon External Link.svg. They are the largest order of arachnid Icon External Link.svgs… Spiders are found worldwide on every continent except for Antarctica Icon External Link.svg, and have become established in nearly every habitat Icon External Link.svg

Anatomically, spiders differ from other arthropods in that the usual body segments Icon External Link.svg are fused into two tagmata Icon External Link.svg, the cephalothorax Icon External Link.svg and abdomen Icon External Link.svg, and joined by a small, cylindrical pedicel Icon External Link.svg. Unlike insect Icon External Link.svgs, spiders do not have antennae Icon External Link.svg. In all except the most primitive group, the Mesothelae Icon External Link.svg, spiders have the most centralized nervous systems of all arthropods, as all their ganglia Icon External Link.svg are fused into one mass in the cephalothorax. Unlike most arthropods, spiders have no extensor Icon External Link.svg muscles in their limbs and instead extend them by hydraulic pressure.

Their abdomens bear appendages that have been modified into spinneret Icon External Link.svgs that extrude silk Icon External Link.svg from up to six types of glands. Spider web Icon External Link.svgs vary widely in size, shape and the amount of sticky thread used. It now appears that the spiral orb web may be one of the earliest forms, and spiders that produce tangled cobwebs are more abundant and diverse than orb-web spider Icon External Link.svgs.
