Features

Explosive. When the fungus is reduced to 0 hit points, it explodes in a 20 foot radius sphere. Creatures in the area takes 1 thunder damage and are covered with spores.

Creatures that are reduced to 0 hit points within 1 week of being exposed to the spores cannot regain hit points, except by magical means. If they die within 1 week of being exposed, their corpse will grow pustules that burst releasing a dozen immature Azure Fungi (who disengage and dash to flee). While not a disease, any means of curing disease will neutralize the spores.

Actions

Multiattack. The fungus can make one tentacle attack against up to 4 targets within reach.

Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft.; one creature. Hit: 5 (1d4+3) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d4) necrotic damage. If the fungus hits a Medium size creature or smaller, the target must make a DC 14 saving throw or be grappled. The fungus may only grapple 1 creature at a time. Creatures that are grappled at the start of the fungus' turn, are hit automatically by a tentacle attack.

Reactions

Deflect Arrows. The fungus can use its reaction to catch thrown weapons or ammunition from a ranged weapon used against it. The fungus must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 10). If it succeeds, it takes no damage from the attack and the fungus gains an additional reaction. If it fails the save, it takes damage as normal and has expended its reaction for the turn.

Preemptive Strike. The fungus can use its reaction when a creature enters its reach to make a tentacle attack. If the attack hits, the fungus gains an additional reaction.

Description

Azure fungi are often mistaken for Grell. They consist of a floating, lumpy, spherical body with long, blueish tentacles hanging from it. They have no eyes and no mouth (sages suggest they absorb nutrients through their tentacles).

They are deceptively quick, often striking an attacker before it can engage, and even catch arrows. They often strike from hiding. They have no eyes, but perceive their environment with clarity.

The azure fungi are not evil, but will attack other creatures without provocation. They seem intelligent, and can communicate with each other via subtle tentacle movements, pheromones, or some other, undiscovered means, but have no verbal language.
