5e:Shadowfell
Shadowfell
The Shadowfell (a.k.a. Plane of Shadow) is a plane leached of color, cloaked in Darkness[2] With a pitch black sky without sun or stars.[2]
The Shadowfell, along with the Feywild, are part of the Inner Planes and the Echoes of the Material Plane. Major features such as famous structures, natural or constructed, often have a distorted parallel in the Shadowfell.[2]
The Shadowfell is home to Shadow Dragons and many undead, as well as other creatures such as cloakers and darkmantles.[2]
Shadow Crossings
Shadow crossings are places where the Material Plane and Shadowfell are thin and sometimes overlap, making it easy to cross from one to the other. On the Material Plane, these are often places of darkness or death.[2]
Domains of Dread
A Domain of Dread is a space within the Shadowfell under the control of a Darklord who's power warps and twists the Shadowfell, but also traps them within that space.[2] The best known Domain of Dread is Barovia with it's Darklord Strahd von Zarovich.[2]
Shadowfell Dispair
Optional Rule
The despair in the Shadowfell can place a mental strain on adventurers. The {{SRD5|GM} can require a character to attempt a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw. Failure results in the character obtaining an effect from the Shadowfell Despair table:[2]
| Shadowfell Dispair[2] | |
|---|---|
| d6 | Effect |
| 1-3 | Apathy. Disadvantage on death saving throws and initiative, and believes it "can't make a difference". |
| 4-5 | Dread. Disadvantage on all saving throws and believes "I'm going to die here". |
| 6 | Madness. Disadvantage on ability checks and Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma saving throws, and believes they "can't tell what's real". |
While having a dispair effect, failing a saving throw causes the character to reroll on the Shadowfell Desair table replacing the effect.
Removing the Despare: At the end of each long rest, the character may attempt a Wisdom Saving Throw (DC 15) to end the despair effect (yes this is a higher DC). calm emotions or any spell that removes a curse ends the despair.[2]
